Storage Vocabulary

  • Arbitrated Loop - in context of FibreChannel technology it is description of topology in a loop.
  • Backup window - means the time necessary for backup performing. It is a critical parameter when increasing data volume and it is a basic parameter for solution of backup architecture.
  • BakBone - producer of enterprise backup SW NetVault, now Quest-Dell
  • BCM – Business Continuity Management - BCM is managerial discipline, which targets at identification of potential impacts impending to the company after breakdown. It creates frame for providing certain level of immunity and ability to respond to an unexpected situation.
  • Buffer-Buffer Credits - a term concerning buffer store of devices functioning on FC technology basis. Very significant parameter for realization of long-distance optical connection of FC technologies.
  • Cache Partitioning - a method of disk array buffer store segmenting, which enables to harmonize cache parameters conformably with applications for reaching the maximum performance.
  • Clone - physical duplication of disk system made by i.e. devices of disk array controller.
  • D2D2T - backup scheme called Disk-To-Disk-To-Tape (D2D2T)
  • D2T - backup scheme Disc-to-tape, when backup SW makes data migrate from source to tape-based device.
  • DAS – Direct Attached Storage - (storage connected directly to servers) – individual storage devices are connected directly to servers while disks may be internal or located in an external disk array.
  • DLM – Data Lifecycle Management - policies, processes and tools enabling to define information price and to make it migrate to a speed-suitable storage but at the cost of GB of stored information. A way to reach a price-efficient archival solution.
  • DRP – Disaster Recovery Planning - processes of restoration of critical IT services run after natural disaster, catastrophe or a big accident in infrastructure
  • E_port - Expansion port in Fibre Channel technology
  • Ethernet - the most common inter-PCs communication protocol (LAN – Local Area Network, MAN – Metropolitan Area NetWork, WAN – Wide Area Network).
  • F_port - a port for point to point topology in FibreChannel networks
  • Fibre Channel - high-efficient connection of servers and storage systems (FC SAN – Storage Area Network) currently working by 8 Gbit/s transfer speeds
  • HITACHI DATA SYSTEMS - a division of HITACHI company producing Enterprise disk array systems.
  • HSM - Hierarchical Storage Management - automatic data transferring between faster (more expensive) and slower (cheaper) mediums.
  • ILM - Information Lifecycle Management - see DLM
  • Incremental Backup - a backup method, when only objects modified since last backup are part of backup.
  • iSCSI – SCSI přes IP - a less costly alternative of servers and storage systems connection (IP SAN) developed as an alternative to FibreChannel with certain limits.
  • LAN – Local Area Network (local net) - connection among servers and users or desk computers.
  • LAN Free backup - backup technology, where data are made to migrate in face of backup device through dedicated network (SAN) and does not load the LAN infrastructure.
  • Logical Unit Number (LUN) - SCSI identifier of logical disk.
  • LTO – Linear Tape Open - a technology and format of backup mechanics. It has currently 4 generations; the highest one stores 800/1600GB into one medium.
  • NAS – Network-attached storage - simple devices providing shared storage
  • RAID 0 – “striping” - data are striped through at least 2 disks in order to increase
  • RAID 1 – “mirroring” - identical data are simultaneously recorded into two disks. If one of them fails, data are still available on the other one.
  • RAID 3 a RAID 4 - data blocks are recorded in a group of disks and one of them is instrumental to recording of parity. If one of the disks fails, data can be restored by using the other disks.
  • RAID 5 - similar to RAID 3/4, except for the fact that the parity is distributed among all disks.
  • RAID 6 - extension of RAID 5 parity principles by another parity stream. System RAID 6 is immune to blackout of two disks at the same moment and nowadays it is almost necessary for capacity storage with SATA disks.
  • Rebuild - security restoring by parity on a disk array after disk fallout. Disk system uses reserve disks (HotSpare) and rebuilds the content of the out of order disk.
  • SAN – Storage Area Network - a network dedicated for storage devices, usually for FibreChannel technology.
  • SAS - a protocol, serial form of SCSI technology.
  • Snapshot - an image of disk system made at a certain time; copying in order make a consistent data copy for consecutive backups, tests or eventual immediate restoration of app running of historical data.
  • Tape Library - storing device compound of tape mechanics, which perform reading and data recording on a magnetic tape.
  • Thin provisioning - it enables the users to assign virtual memory disks according to presumed future capacity requirements – and without this capacity being available on the physical disks of the disk array. New disks are installed at the moment of running out of the physically available capacity.
  • TrueCopy - in terminology of HITACHI it is a process of synchronous and asynchronous replications between two disk arrays.
  • Virtualizace - virtualization creates interface (layer) between physical devices and their logical representation and thereby tones the differences of various physical devices. It also occurs in the enterprise disk arrays area but even more often the term ‘virtualization’ is perceived as a layer enabling to start up more virtual servers on one physical server.
  • VMware - a SW product for virtualization of servers, desktops and so on.
  • VTL – Virtual Tape Library - in terms of backup SW it means emulation of tape mechanics, mediums and slots by the medium of backup SW on the disk storage. Especially suitable for solution of demanding backup tasks like big amount of small files.
  • VTL – Virtual Tape Library - in a different context it means disk nature appliance, which presents itself as a tape library with robotics, mediums, slots and it can replace the real tape library without making any difference for the current implementation of backup SW.
