Laptop Backup by Deduplication

Data change their value and take the significance. Number of companies realizes that and the primary problem is not the loss or steal of laptop anymore. The main problem is loss of data.

Laptop backup is not completely an easy issue – backup mechanisms have to be able to cope with slow and asymmetric internet connectivity and they shouldn’t lead to an extreme data increase in the central. These requirements are fulfilled only by principles based on deduplication. The set of SW tools in Sync by DRUVA Company is the efficient solution.

The elementary problem in a real solution is not data backup into the central office of the company. Standard approaches somehow make the data migrate to the central office.  If the connection is strong enough there is no problem.

But what if it is not?

Number of common ‘home’ or mobile connections creates illusion of very fast connection.  Most of the connections is asymmetric and the provider of connectivity mentions the download speed as the main parameter.

The download speed is not put into effect so much while data backup and by contrast the upload is used to full capacity, which is lower in the order of magnitude. Data transfer of hundreds of MB or hundreds of GB is almost unreal at the standard approach.

Efficient and basically the only one solution is setting of algorithms, which manage to reduce the volume of transferred data. This principle is called deduplication; in thiscontext running on the client (not on the central device).

What is ‘deduplication’?

Data deduplication is a method of data redundant elimination. The principle is that the deduplication algorithm divides each file into several blocks. Then it performs calculation of unique identifiers describing each of unique blocks.  

If a block occurs during the backup, which has already existed, it neither transfers to client again nor stores into the central storage – it is only replaced by block reference, which has already been stored.

Deduplication also helps to:

  • save money for purchase of new disks
  • reduce the network load
  • restore data faster in case of necessity
When is the benefit of deduplication the highest?
Firstly in there, where identical or similar files appear:
  • That is fulfilled at the backup in terms of one (among Full Backups there are rather small changes)
  • And it is also fulfilled at the backup in terms of many clients (it usually contains the same operating system, users have locally the same data and so on)

Compression ratios of deduplication algorithms may vary (according to data type) typically i.e. 1:50, in special cases even more!
